Introduction

The Huawei AITO M9, a collaboration between tech giant Huawei and automobile manufacturer Seres, is turning heads in the global EV (Electric Vehicle) and EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) market. Built with cutting-edge technology, premium design, and a futuristic cockpit powered by HarmonyOS, the AITO M9 represents a giant leap forward in the smart SUV category.

Exterior Design and Build

With bold lines, a muscular body, and an aerodynamic profile, the AITO M9 exudes presence on the road. This full-size SUV features retractable door handles, futuristic LED headlights capable of projections, and a premium paint finish available in striking colors like Galaxy Blue and Yadan Black. Its dimensions (5,230mm length, 3,110mm wheelbase) make it one of the largest SUVs in its class.

Interior and Comfort

Inside, the AITO M9 is a tech-lover’s paradise. It offers a 6-seater configuration (2+2+2) with ventilated, heated, and massaging Nappa leather seats. The dashboard features a triple-screen setup: a 12.3” digital driver display, 15.6” central touchscreen, and a 16” passenger screen. Rear passengers can enjoy a 32” electric drop-down entertainment screen with immersive audio powered by Huawei’s 25-speaker sound system.

Powertrain and Performance

The AITO M9 comes in two versions:

  • EREV version: Combines a 1.5L turbocharged engine as a generator with dual electric motors delivering 365kW (approx. 489 hp), 0–100 km/h in 4.9s, and over 1,400 km total range with a 52kWh battery.

  • BEV version: Dual-motor AWD setup with 390kW (approx. 523 hp), 100kWh battery offering 630 km CLTC range, and 0–100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds.

Smart Tech and Autonomous Features

Huawei has integrated its latest HarmonyOS 4 operating system for a seamless digital experience. The Huawei ADS 2.0 autonomous driving system (upgraded to ADS 3.3 in 2025) enables Level 2+ autonomy with lidar, cameras, mmWave radar, and AI-based decision-making. The system supports lane changes, automatic parking, roundabout navigation, and obstacle avoidance.

Safety Ratings and Features

The AITO M9 achieved an impressive 5-star safety rating in the China C-NCAP crash tests with a 93.9% overall score. Key safety features include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a reinforced safety cage with multiple airbags.

Pricing and Market Response

Starting from ¥469,800 (approx. $65,000), the AITO M9 offers exceptional value for its features. Within months of launch, it garnered over 100,000 orders and became one of the top-selling smart SUVs in China. Its blend of luxury, performance, and tech has helped it challenge established brands like BMW and Mercedes in the domestic market.

Conclusion

The Huawei AITO M9 isn’t just another electric SUV — it's a statement about the future of mobility. With luxurious interiors, tech-forward features, autonomous driving capabilities, and unbeatable range, the AITO M9 is a smart, powerful, and stylish choice for families and tech enthusiasts alike.

Huawei, once known primarily for smartphones and telecom equipment, began shifting focus after facing global trade restrictions. Seeking to diversify its business, the tech giant set its sights on a new frontier — smart electric vehicles (EVs).

In 2020, Huawei announced that it would not manufacture cars independently, but would become a key supplier of intelligent vehicle components like HarmonyOS, lidar systems, chips, and cloud connectivity.

The Birth of AITO: Huawei x Seres Collaboration

Huawei partnered with Seres (a subsidiary of Chongqing Sokon Industry Group) to create AITO — which stands for "Adding Intelligence to Auto." AITO cars are manufactured by Seres, while Huawei provides:

  • Operating systems (HarmonyOS)

  • Smart cockpit solutions

  • Autonomous driving (ADS 2.0/3.0)

  • Electric drive units

  • Design input and retail network access (sold in Huawei stores)

The first model, AITO M5, was launched in 2021. It quickly gained attention for its tech-rich features and seamless user experience, like smartphone integration and voice-controlled systems.

Milestone: AITO M9 – The Flagship Huawei-Backed SUV

With the release of the AITO M9 in late 2023, Huawei cemented its place in the EV industry. The M9 was the first model fully designed with Huawei’s smart architecture in mind:

  • Designed with Huawei’s industrial design team

  • Powered by Huawei’s HarmonyOS 4

  • Integrated with Huawei ADS 2.0 & upgraded ADS 3.3

  • Assembled in Seres’ Chongqing intelligent manufacturing facility

This marked the first time Huawei had such deep influence on a vehicle’s architecture, software, and marketing — without being a direct manufacturer.

Smart Manufacturing with Huawei Tech

Seres factories, powered by Huawei’s cloud and AI tools, became showcases of smart automotive production:

  • Digital twin manufacturing systems

  • AI-driven quality control

  • Over-the-air software update management

  • Big-data assisted supply chain

Huawei also launched its "1+8+N" intelligent vehicle ecosystem, where:

  • 1 = Car (as the central smart device)

  • 8 = Connected devices (smartphone, wearables, screen, etc.)

  • N = IoT & cloud services

This ecosystem lets users sync their mobile lives directly into their cars — a game changer in the EV market.

Looking Forward

Huawei has confirmed its commitment to intelligent EVs and plans to expand partnerships with other Chinese automakers (like Chery, BAIC, and JAC). The goal is to scale up production while standardizing HarmonyOS and ADS across brands.

While Huawei won’t build cars directly, it is now one of the most disruptive forces in automotive technology, redefining what a car can be in the digital age.
